Separating Facts From Stories Before Reacting

Use this when you feel angry, threatened, defensive, or morally certain.

1. Identify the Trigger
What exactly happened? Not what it “means.” Not what it “proves.” Just the observable event.

Ask: What did I actually see, hear, or read?

2. Name the Story You’re Telling
Notice the meaning you added. The motive you assumed. The intention you assigned.

“I’m being ignored.”
“They don’t care.”
“This is discrimination.”
“They’re lying.”
“They’re corrupt.”

Ask: What am I assuming this means?

3. Check for Evidence
Look for proof. Documents. Sources. Direct statements. Policy. Context. Independent confirmation. Check statistics if quoted. Check sources for facts shared. Don't assume any piece of information is true unless you personally have verified its credibility. Now check the opposite of your position for facts, statistics and evidence.

Separate:
• verified credible information
• opinions
• rumours
• interpretations

Ask: What can I verify right now?

4. Test Alternative Explanations
Force yourself to generate at least two other plausible reasons.

Mistake.
Bureaucracy.
Lack of information.
Miscommunication.
System error.

Misrepresentation.
Human limitation.

Ask: What else could explain this?

5. Examine Emotional Investment
Notice if anger, fear, identity, or past trauma is driving your certainty. If I agree or disagree what does that say about me? How does that make me FEEL?

Ask: Do I want this story to be true or not?

6. Respond From Reality, Not Narrative
Act only on what is supported by evidence. Keep your response grounded in facts, not assumptions. Be open to changing your mind if the facts no longer support the limited information you had in the beginning. Growth is expected, stagnation is not.

Ask: If this were reviewed by a neutral third party, would it hold up?

This map protects you from being manipulated by systems, groups, or your own stress.

Understanding What You Can Control: Use this when you feel powerless, stuck, angry, or overwhelmed by systems.

1. Separate Control From Constraint
Identify what is truly outside your control and what is not.

You cannot control:
• other people’s choices
• institutional delays
• past decisions

You can control:
• your preparation
• your evidence
• your timing
• your tone
• your persistence

Ask: What is actually mine to manage here?

2. Identify Your Leverage Points
Find where your actions still matter.

Examples:
• documentation
• escalation channels
• media
• timelines
• policy references
• allies
• appeals

Ask: Where does my effort still create pressure?

3. Build Strategic Capacity
Increase your ability to act effectively.

This includes:
• learning rules
• organizing records
• improving communication
• managing energy
• planning steps

Ask: What skill or resource would strengthen my position?

4. Avoid Reactive Power Loss
Notice behaviours that weaken you.

Examples:
• emotional outbursts
• threats
• oversharing
• impulsive posts
• quitting too early

Ask: Is this helping or hurting my influence?

5. Choose Intentional Action
Act on purpose, not emotion.

Small, consistent, documented actions compound.

Ask: What is the smartest next move?

6. Sustain Yourself
Protect your health and capacity.

Burned-out people lose agency.

Ask: How do I stay strong enough to continue?

This map turns frustration into focused action.
